Urges NEMA, NEDC, ADSEMA, NGO’s Other Relevant Authorities to Provide Emergency Intervention.
The Senator representing Adamawa central senatorial district, Aminu Iya Abbas has commiserated with victims of Yola South, other local government areas who were recently affected by the devastating flood which ravaged many parts of the communities.
The senator in message through his media office in Yola Sunday, also disclosed that the havoc and destruction caused by the rampaging flood disaster cannot be handled by the local communities and called on the relevant agencies operating in the state as well as other well to do individuals to come to the aid of the affected areas.
Iya Abbas who is the chairman Senate Committee on Innovation,Science and Technology also commended the timely efforts of the State Governor Rt Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and other agencies in Adamawa for providing the needed support to the people.
The lawmaker said he was shocked and saddened by the reports of the degree of damage which includes; houses, schools, hospitals and farmlands, also appeal to all the stakeholders and other philanthropists to show support to the victims irrespective of their political differences.
The senator described the flood situation in Adamawa central and other parts of the state as devastating, and urged the Federal Government to provide emergency relief materials to the affected communities through its intervention agencies.
Iya Abbas said, local reports indicates that there’s number of unspecified deaths, which were brought about by the flood especially in Sabon Pegi, Hummare, Modire, Shagari Phase II, Fombinah Motor Park, Yolde Pate and other parts of Yola South local government area of Adamawa central.
It could be recalled that, he Senator Representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly Distinguished Senator Iya Abbas, has called for the dredging of River Benue and construction of Dasin Hausa Dam to check the devastating effects of flooding on communities, along the banks in the state.
Senator Iya Abbas made called while speaking on an existing motion on the floor of the Nigerian Senate sometimes in 2023 on the need to provide lasting solution on flood in about seven local government areas of Adamawa state.
The lawmaker who said the dredging of River Benue, by the Federal Government, became necessary to check the colossal damage, usually associated to flooding in the affected communities which includes: Furore, Yola North, Yola South, Girei in Adamawa Central and Numan, Lamurde and Demsa in Adamawa South.
According to him, the affected LGAs reside along the bank of River Benue, and that whenever the authorities of Cameron Republic releases water from Lagdo Dam couple with rainfall, the river will overflow and cause flooding.
He lamented that the natural disaster claims several lives and destroy property worth millions of naira annually, saying that the only solution to recurrent flooding is the dredging of River Benue and the timely construction of Dasin Hausa Dam
Senator Abbas who narrated the ordeal of the victims of the annual flooding, and urged the Federal Government to embark on dredging of River Benue to permanently address the problem
He equally called on the relevant authorities, to urgently come to the aid of the victims, with the provision of relief materials to alleviate their sufferings.
