Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has charged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to sustain people’s confidence in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.
Speaking while declaring open Emergency National Executive (NEC) meeting of the association Saturday in Yola, the governor, represented by Deputy Governor Kaletapwa Farauta, said the legal profession has served as fulcrum round which the country’s democracy revolves.
“I urge you to be firm in reprimanding the few bad eggs in your midst while celebrating those with demonstrable integrity, dexterity, courage and patriotism.
“I urge you to help in sustaining the confidence in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man. Let justice be done and let justice be seen to be done,” he governor said.
Earlier, NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau SAN urged government at all levels not to take decision no matter how good they may seem without checking the constitution.
Maikyau said, as lawyers they give guidance and protection to the people and government.
“Government should not do something they feel good about. They should check if the law permits them,” the NBA president asvised.
Speaking on the outcomes of election petition judgements, he said the judges rendered justice in those decisions, adding that wherever there is justice there also is commendation as the people would connect to the justice of the case.
He thanked the state Chief Judge for good leadership and reforms in the judiciary, which brings justices to the door step of the common man.
In her remark, the state Chief Judge, Justice Hapsat Abdulrahaman urged the participants to take decisions that would enhance relevance of the bar.
Abdulrahaman praised the judiciary for entrusting women to handle election petitions across the country.
