Fond memories came alive Wednesday for some former students of the famous Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Yola as they visited the school.
The former students who visited the premier secondary school under the auspices of Old Girls Association GGSS Yola (1989 set), expressed satisfaction with how facilities had been kept, especially as they moved from one hostel to another, recalling which of the houses they belonged to and how they lived as boarding students.
One of the visiting old girls, Mrs Hauwa Banu, stressing how proud she remained to have had her secondary education at the GGSS Yola, said public schools are better than appreciated.
“Public schools have more qualified teachers who impact such education on students that stands them out, enabling them to do better in many instances than students in private schools,” she said.
Mrs Hauwa, a director in the office of the Adamawa State Deputy Governor, while addressing the students who gathered in the assembly hall to receive her and other members of the association, advised the students to feel okay with being in a public school.
Another of the former students, Mrs Fadimatu Salihu said they decided to visit their alma mater mainly to give encouragement to the students.
Mrs Fadimatu told the girls, “We were humble students here like you. Whatever it takes, see to it that you continue with school and be good representatives of womanhood.”
Among the other former GGSS Yola students on the Wednesday trip to the school were Kande Adamu, Zainab Buba, Fatima Ballah, Hannatu Labaran, Aisha Halidu, Aisha Farouq, Hureira Kadir, and Hauwa Fari.
The association gave gifts to the students, including sanitary pads, toilet tissues as well as bathing and washing soaps.
The GGSS Yola, one of Adamawa’s oldest and most famous secondary schools, has the reputation of having produced many of Adamawa’s illustrious women, including the the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 election, Senator Aishatu Ahmed (Binani).
