The Adamawa State Mass Education Board and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have flagged off technical and vocational education training (TVET targeting 3,000 vulnerable youths and women in Hong Local Government Area.
The training programme, developed by UNICEF and funded by the Government of Germany through KFW, is being implemented by the mass education board.
During the flag-off at Kilba Hall in Hong town on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Mass Education Board, Aminu Umar, disclosed that the 3,000 women and youths registered for the training will be taught in six trades.
The trades, according to him, include shoe and bag making, fashion design and sewing, welding and fabrication, interlocking and tiling, and poultry farming.
He commended Governor Ahmadu Fintiri “for creating the right environment” for nongovernmental organisations like UNICEF to operate and to bring programmes such as the skills training to the state.
In his remark, UNICEF Education Consultant, Joel Isaiah, said the initiative for the training programme was motivated by the wisdom in teaching people to fish for themselves rather than giving them fish that can last them for only a short time.
The UNICEF official asked the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity to learn the skills they had chosen and place themselves in the position to fish for themselves
The state Commissioner of Education, Dr Garba Umar who was represented on the occasion by Yohana Audu, urged the trainees to strive to ensure that they use the gains of the programme to successfully fight poverty.
Two of the trainees, Silas Timothy and Amina Hamidu who spoke on behalf of the trainees, thanked the state government and UNICEF for organizing the programme.
A highlight of the training flag-off ceremony in Hong was an inspection of the tools, including sewing machines and poultry cages, procured for the practical training exercise.
