Adamawa Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta has advised youths to embrace factual and accurate information dessemination for building trust, peace, and unity among diverse Nigerians
Farauta made the appeal in an interview with journalists, shortly after the 29th and 30th combined convocation lecture of Modibbo Adama University Yola delivered by the vice Chancellor, Federal University of Kashere, Professor Umaru Pate.
Th lecture was titiled “Building Trust Amidst Conflict: Communication, leadership, and the promise of peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
She described the lecture as educative and thoughtful.
According to the deputy, who
underscoring the importance of fact checking information , urged for tolerance in diversity and cautioned citizens against negative tendencies that are counter productive to the society.
Earlier, Professor Umaru Pate in his paper, observed
poor governance and corruption, insecurity and conflict, perceived injustice and marginalization, misinformation and divisive rhetoric among others as factors behind distrust, frustration, alienation, and disengagement, specifically among young Nigerians.
The University Don noted that the lecture examines trust as a critical foundation for nation building and contends that the prospects of a new nation depend on the quality of communication and leadership.
It also analyzes how exclusionary narratives, misinformation, weak dialogue, and ethical lapses in leadership have deepened mistrust and undermined peaceful coexistence.
Pate highlighted significance of role of generating knowledge, shaping civic values, and nurturing ethical leaders.
He argued that inclusive communication, responsible media engagement, transparent governance, and value driven leadership are vital to restoring confidence, strengthening social cohesion, and managing diversity constructively.
He further tasked universities to adopt technology, research, and innovation driven trust building in the fast changing world.
The vice chancellor encouraged the use of digital devices as tools to solve communicative issues positively for peace building and coexistence.
The lecture further emphasized that trust building requires a firm commitment to truthful communication that confronts challenges, ethical leadership, inclusive governance, responsible media practice and education for peace that embedded civic responsibility at all levels of learning.
