As part of activities marking this year’s World Green Day, the National Agency for the Great Green Wall has embarked on sensitization and tree planting campaign in Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola.
Speaking at the event, the state coordinator and field officer of the Agency Suleiman Abubakar stated that every second Thursday of July is set aside to celebrate great green Day.
He revealed that the aim and objectives of the Agency is to halt desertification and prevent biodiversity loss and ensure ecosystems resilience to climate change.
According to him the agency’s vision is to have green and fertile productive land for sustainable development in the dry lands.
Abubakar said the agency is operating in 11 states In the country, Adamawa being among the benefiting state where the agency has been engaging in programs such as establishment of wood lots, shelter belt, skills acquisition training for women and youths such as tailoring, fish and poultry farming, rearing of ruminant animals among others to improve livelihood and resilience.
The head of legal Abdulkadir Modibbo who represented the Director General pf the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Yusuf Maina Bukar, appreciated the positive impact the Adama2a State Government has been making on environment through several policies.
The commissioner of environment Mohammed Sadiq Muhammed highlighted the ban on cutting of trees for charcoal among other purposes by Governor Fintiri to save the ecosystems.
He commended the effort of the Agency in its determination to protect the environment through diverse ways.
In her goodwill messages Safiya Mohammed Abubakar, the state controller, Federal Ministry of Environment, advocated planting and nurturing trees for a better and greener environment.
