At least 33 people have died as a result of floods that have continued to cause havoc in some communities in Adamawa State.
This was disclosed at an emergency meeting organized by the state Government with humanitarian actors and some relevant agencies to discuss the way forward in view of increase volumes of water from the river banks.
As a result of the ravaging floods, the state government through Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) has established 11 camps across four local government areas, namely Yola North, Yola South, Lamurde and Demsa.
Statistics given by the executive Secretary ADSEMA, Muhammed Suleiman, revealed that 1,600 displaced households, comprising 9,960 individuals are taking shelter in the camps.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri who spoke through his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta at the meeting, said as people-driven government, they are up and doing to reduce the impact of the flood on the citizens.
He revealed that approvals have been made to ensure that the basic needs of affected people are provided to ensure their safety and good health.
The governor reiterated that though some schools have been occupied by the flood victims, the situation would not hinder government from making arrangement to ensure that learning activities are not affected.
Earlier the commissioner of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Reintegration, Barr. Bello Hamman Diram and his counterparts from Ministry of Information and Strategy Neido Geoffrey as well as that of Women Affairs and Social Development Wunfe Anthony said the meeting is necessary to save lives and property.
They said the unprecedented displacement of people by the floods is now a source of concern, hence the need for stakeholders engagement to see how best to respond to the situation.
